Q. for Dr. Marchbein on Bulbocavernosus ReflexFrom: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 23 Aug 2000 18:41:47 -0500 (CDT)
Hello and thanks for your response to my "Shrunken genitals right after hyst" post earlier this month. You mentioned testing for the bulbocavernosus reflex which I have some questions about. 1. looking on the web, I've seen the BC reflex mentioned in women as causing contraction of the levator ani--can contraction of the BC *muscle* also/separately be felt (as it can in men)? 2. Is this reflex something that I should be able to detect by self-testing? (I can't, and don't know if I should be worried...) 3. When men have impotence due to severed nerves from having their prostate removed, does this affect the BC reflex? Is the sense of touch on the penis still intact? 4. After looking at Gray's Anatomy, I'm realizing that what's not working is/are my bulbi vestibuli. Is the BC muscle the primary actor in compressing the veins leading from this tissue, or are other muscles more important here? Thanks again-- Ann p.s. I've heard from one doctor who reports having known one patient who had symptoms like mine after a hysterectomy. I feel better not being alone...
