This discharge is normal. Mid-cycle, there is an increase in the mucous production from the cervix as part of ovulation. Tampons would be OK, just as long as you remember to change them regularly. The danger is since you aren't flowing, you may forget it is in, and leave it in too long - setting the risk for toxic shock. If you can wear a light day pad, that's better.
