Re: Abnormal Pap SmearsFrom: jwang, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 17 Jul 2000 20:47:43 -0500 (CDT)
The fact that you may be having another colpo if you have another abnormal smears means you are less like to get cancer. It is widely believed that cervical dysplasias, esp. severe, are caused by a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus cannot be eliminated from the body, so there is always a chance of dysplasia returning. Smoking has been shown to increase the risk and severity of HPV related problems. If you smoke, this may be a factor.
