I'm sorry if this seems judgemental, but this doc just sounds weird. Most docs I know barely have time to see their scheduled patients, let alone go "observe" elective surgery for a former patient. I can't imagine any legitimate reason he would want to be there if the surgery doesn't require his skills and expertise. Unless he just wants to be able to bill the insurance as an "assistant" (which would be possibly fraudulent).

However, I am a little confused why you had to give the surgeon a $500 deposit if the surgery isn't even scheduled yet? I understand the surgeon wanting a deposit to put you on the schedule, but what is he doing right now to justify a $500 deposit? Maybe one of the medical professional can shed some light on this practice.

Anyways, I would certainly document the unprofessional conduct and forward it to the state board that licenses doctors in your state. There's no telling if he's done the same thing to other patients.

BTW -- did the Gyn refer you to this surgeon?
