Large uterine fibroids - options?From: Vanessa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 31 May 2000 21:59:28 -0500 (CDT)
My doctor discovered several small uterine fibroids via pelvic exam in January but recommended no treatment. I went for a second opinion earlier this month, and an ultrasound revealed several large fibroids (12cm & 9cm pedunculated)and 3 inside the uterine walls ranging in size from 3 cm to 7 cm, with my uterus measuring 16-20 weeks. The doctor immediately said surgery was the only option - I could choose myomectomy or hysterectomy. When I went back to schedule the surgery and discuss the details, she'd decided we shouldn't undergo surgery now but should re-evaluate the situation in 4 months. I'm 41 and had been on HRT for over 5 years for early menopause when the fibroids were discovered. HRT has been discontinued. FSH level is 6. My main complaints are painful periods, discomfort from the pressure (particularly back pain), weight gain, and loss of energy. No heavy bleeding or urinary problems to date. Could the discontinuation of HRT cause fibroids this large to shrink considerably? Is it possible to estimate the weight of a fibroid by its size?
