Gardnerella, now called Mobiluncus, is one the numerous species of bacteria that live in the vagina all the time, and who, in the right circumstances, overgrow to cause their symptoms. This bacteria prefers a more alkaline (as opposed to acidic) environment than is usual in the vagina, like yeast, and there are women that for one reason or another maintain a higher Ph than is usual. There a number of medical conditions, such as diabetes and hypothyroidism that can lead to this recurrent problem, and some purely "female" issues, such as low vaginal estrogen that can hurt as well.

You need to find a doctor who will take the time to fully evaluate you for these different conditions, and who will then work to develop life strategies that will limit the number of outbreaks that you have.
