I'd love some information about the effects hormones produce in my body during monthly cycling with lactation. I had my 5th baby 13 mos ago; she is still 99% exclusively breastfed. My cycles returned around 5 mos post-partum. I'm 38. I have several questions. *Although my milk stopped leaking with letdown months ago, during a few days mid-cycle I will notice leaking again with each letdown. There doesn't seem to be a difference in the strength of the letdown, although my breasts do seem to fill up faster during this time. What causes this? Is it strictly hormonal or more the effect of several changes initiated by hormones? For instance, are my breasts more sensitive to the effects of oxytocin as a result of ovulation hormones? (And what exactly are the hormones involved in ovulation?)

*Since I had my first vaginal birth 10 years ago I noticed that my cervix/lower abdomen became very uncomfortable during mid-cycle, to the point where I have to sit down gingerly to avoid increasing the pain. Also, my lower abdomen seems swollen every month at mid-cycle. What causes this swelling? a) Why did this begin to happen only after my first vaginal birth as opposed to after my first two babies were born, each by c-section? b)Which hormones are responsible for this discomfort and c)if spotting occurs at this time as well why does it?

*I notice quite a decrease in milk production a few days to a week prior to my period. What hormone causes this?

*Since I began to feel this ovulation pain, I've conceived twice and both times I fell pregnant I never felt the ovulation pain that month (and so I though I hadn't ovulated and so couldn't be pregnant. Surprise!). I'm guessing that now my monthly pain is occurring well after ovulation since when I did get pregnant I obviously ovulated without pain and conceived and somehow conception cancelled my pain that month. Can anyone explain how the body works to produce these symptoms?

Thanks for providing this wonderful informational forum.
