PCO or Polycystic Ovarian SyndromeFor more information on symptoms and treatment of endometriosis visit www.EndometriosisZONE.org. From: Victoria (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 18 May 2000 16:52:21 -0400
Hi Shannon, There has been information out for the past 6 to 7 years on using metformin. This is because of a number of medical journal reports and studies done on women with PCO and finding that they are insulin resistant, a pre-diabetic type 2 stage. There are a bunch of stories that tell of women who do restart their periods (I am one of them), get pregnant, etc. with metformin. Most of the stories I hear is that the hirsuitism is still a problem, but the dark colored rings around the neck (acanthosis nigricans), energy returns, skin problems lessen, some diabetic symptoms lessen, etc. There are some journal information that do discuss the higher cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and several other problems those of us with PCO face in the future. OC/BCP can aggrevate the insulin resistance in PCO, for instance. My apologies to the fine doctors here, but most ob/gyn's do not know about this information or will not look into this option (or things such as low carbohydrate dieting, etc.) from the comments that I have seen from fellow sufferers. Have you considered checking with an endocrinologist to do further testing for possible insulin resistance or a reproductive endocrinologist? A reproductive endocrinologist usually has more advanced information, training and experience with problems such as this. I've got some of the studies on my web pages, if you would like to take a look. Victoria http://www.angelfire.com/va2/womenshealthurls
