A pap smear is a screening test, which means that it is not precise enough to make a diagnosis about a problem, it is only useful to identify a subset of patients that need to be looked at more closely. A colposcope is a low power microscope and a strong light that are used to examine your cervix to see what, if anything, is causing your pap to be abnormal. Sometimes, it is necessary to take a small (very small...crumb sized) biopsy of your cervix. Once the nature of the problem is defined by the colpo and biopsy, a treatment plan can be tailored to your situation.
