Re: uterine fibroid and pulmonary thrombosisFrom: Katherine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 28 Apr 2000 17:07:21 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Marsha, I had a similar problem to yours, though for different reasons, I believe. Here's what happened (I think; some of this is just an informed guess): It is certain that, over a year ago, I had very large (5 or more month sized) fiboids. In early February of last year, I had a long telephone call with a very difficult employer, two hours or longer, while I sat cross legged on my office chair. To make a long story short, I developed a blood clog in my right thigh and pulmonary embolisms in my lungs as a result. My doctor believed that it was because my fibroids were pressing on the major vein in my groin. Anyway, this was a life threatening situation. I was hospitalized for two weeks, and afterwards, I also was on coumadin. Before all of this happened, I had hoped to avoid surgery for my fibroids, hoping that menopause would shrink them. But I was advised to get a hysterectomy ASAP, meaning three months after the pulmonary embolisms - to give the coumadin time enough to dissolve the blood clot. What happened is that before the surgery, I was taken off coumadin and injected myself with a blood thinner (heparin?) until and after the surgery. I don't think that this answers your questions, but I am worried about women with pulmonary embolisms (emboli?) associated with fibroids and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have. I have been there/done that and am happy to help. Feel free to email me. Love, Katherine
