varicose veinsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 31 Mar 2000 21:25:05 -0600 (CST)
This may not seem to be a obgyn subject, but I think it indirectly applies. I was being fitted today for surgical compression stockings for my veins, which are terrible (both legs stripped ten years ago, with another round to come soon). I saw a pamphlet which talked about the extra progesterone floating around in pregnancy perhpas dilating veins. Well, that was certainly when mine developed, although I also gained a lot of weight and had big babies. For the last six months I was taking 10 mg provera two weeks a month, and coincidentally? my legs seemed to get somewhat worse again. I also have fibroids, which I know have enlarged the uterus to about 12 weeks or more (I think they are continuing to grow). So my questions are: could taking the progesterone have worsened the legs, and does the extra weight/size of the uterus put extra pressure on the veins (they're bad right up to the groin)? Unfortunately, I'm in a job that requires a lot of standing or sitting at a computer, but not much walking around. I know I have to change my lifestyle to walk as much as possible, although I've been walking about 1/2 hour a day for the last three years.
