Static Scanner, was Re: Medicare rules for sonogramsFrom: Terry J. DuBose (tjdubose@juno.com)Sun Dec 21 10:56:11 1997

Would love to get my hands on one of the old Rohe or GE articulated arm scanners that had the capability of doing bi-stable & gray scale static scanning as well as real-time linear. I find nothing helps students understand where we are like being able to demonstrate were we have been. I had an old GE at the Jr. college I came from in Austin. Once the students felt fairly comfortable with contemporary real-time, I would get on the GE table and say ok, each one of you paint a good image of the long axis of my IVC and liver. More learning took place in that 1 hour of struggling and watching the others trying to control that arm than all the lectures I had given. Something about that experience is a little like hearing a lecture on swimming then jumping in the water, more likely to sink than swim. Students really need hands on to learn sonography. Of course, you realize that my budget is zip. I can probably find an old pick-up to haul it away for you. The real problem at UAMS is going to be finding room to put it. My current lab is too small. But it might be worth some good PR for you. If you are interested, I'll talk to the Dean and my Chair to see what we can find. Let me know what you think. Peace, Terry J. DuBose

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
