Re: Medicare rules for sonogramsFrom: DuBose, Terry (DuboseTerryJ@exchange.uams.edu)Thu Dec 18 09:41:38 1997
<snip>I think medicine will be better if everyone can use sonography...if they know what they are doing. >> Come on Terry! Be irascible!!! It's okay! Do you really think this?<snip> Only in the context that *if they know what they are doing.* My point is that sonography is not the sole turf of radiology, and ob/gyn sonography is not the sole turf of ob/gyn physicians. If they are SKILLED, and KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, then it is better medicine. As Senator Pat Schroder said, "The only thing worse than not having a sonogram is having a bad one." Peace, Terry J. It only assumes that the sonographer is blind and stupid. There are the nurses who want to grab the transducers, and have put forth guidelines that requires only about 12 hours (contact hours, not college credit hours) of physics and instrumentation for Pete's sake! And we have non-medical folks doing entertainment videos at baby showers and no one seems to be regulating them. I think medicine will be better if everyone can use sonography...if they know what they are doing. >> Come on Terry! Be irascible!!! It's okay! Do you really think this? How about the patient scanning themselves? I've given the transducer to patients (for a few seconds only) when they've become overly demanding and obnoxious about wanting to see something. They are thrilled to hold the probe, too! And it shuts them up! Maybe they should take a TV correspondence course, then they could check in to rent-a-sono centers and perform the exam themselves...and it would be so much cheaper, and lots less malpractice suits. Plus they could look at the baby's sex for as long as they want and as many times as they want....and they could bring in the whole neighborhood!!! And take 8X10 glossies.... (hey, this is a good idea! I could start a franchise across the country! What do you think, Mark....Diana Ross' self-sonography center, a sono and a song!) ;-] Everyone just cannot do it! At least not very well. Let's go back to static B-mode...nobody grabbed the probe from me then! In those days, the doctors used to put the films up on the light box upside-down.... Now they want to supervise! Diana Ross, RDMS,RT

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
