What we need to remember is that there is no such thing as a positive or a negative on this SCREENING test. Your results should come to you as a risk for; i.e. the risk for a neural tube defect is 1 in 26,600 or the risk for NTD is 1 in 15 or the risk for trisomy is 1 in 250. Then when you discuss the results with the patient you explain to them what the chances are, what the tests for finding out is and what its risks are, and what the disorder is. Then you let them decide on whether or not to have the definitive procedure.

This test is not meant to make a diagnosis, it is meant to delineate a group who is at increased risk. I always explain to my patients, before they accept or decline the triple screen, that it never tells anyone that their baby has any disorder or that their baby does not have any disorder. It only gives us a risk.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
