Bill, I understand that many believe this is just another layer of bureaucracy; but it will assure that the sonographic instrument operator has at least entry level knowledge of what they are expected to do during an exam. This kind of law should, and I believe it will, result in better health care for the patients, which is what we are supposed to be concerned about. I do not see how having a license to practice sonography will "further remove" you from your patients, or that it will require countless hours of paperwork. With your 31 years of sonographic experience, I am sure you are very capable, but how else can the public distinguish between you and someone else who simply went to a 3 day workshop? There is a reason that we expect physicians and nurses to hold licenses, and I expect no less from our profession. By the same logic, I could say that traffic laws interfere with my personal rights to drive any speed I want and will slow my progress in life. But that is a small matter when compared to the disasters that would result from everyone driving as fast as they want, anywhere, any time. Terry J. Another layer of regualation that will further remove me from my patients to likely spend more countless hours of paperwork not to mention "visits" from state bureaucrats to justify to them and others that my 31 years in sonography is worthy of an expensive license. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
