Re: Sonography Fetal cryingFrom: DuBose, Terry (DuboseTerryJ@uams.edu)Mon May 8 10:31:09 2006
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Betty, I had not seen this. It is very interesting, but there is one contradiction. In the text below the video window is this: Baby Cries in Womb This video may be preceded by a short advertisement. When sound was played through the uterine wall of this fetus' mother, the fetus startled and turned the head. Then the fetus showed all the characteristics of crying: an open mouth, increasing head tilts, a quivering chin and several irregular breaths before exhaling and settling with a turn of the head, mouthing and swallowing. This may lead one to believe that the fetus may be crying in response to the sonographic (ultrasonic) energy applied. However, on listening to the audio on the video, it says after the "vibro-acoustic stimulus" is applied. The vibro-acoustic stimulus has been known to elicit a "blink-startle fetal response, but is not ultrasound. It is a loud noise maker in the range of human hearing. http://dsc.discovery.com/news/media/fetalcryingvideo.html Fetus crying in the womb (video) <http://dsc.discovery.com/news/media/fetalcryingvideo.html> Terry J. There is a short commercial preceding the video -- it is technically a very good sono video. http://dsc.discovery.com/news/media/fetalcryingvideo.html Fetus crying in the womb (video) <http://dsc.discovery.com/news/media/fetalcryingvideo.html> ?submitted by plombard <http://digg.com/users/plombard> 5 hours 59 minutes ago (via http://dsc.discovery.com/news/... <http://dsc.discovery.com/news/...> ) Amazing research out of the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. Babies were "startled" with an audio tone played through speakers directed into the stomach of pregnant women, and babies' responses were monitored via ultrasound. The authors maintain that fetal crying may occur as early as 28 weeks!

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
