Yes, this indentation of the back of the neck is helpful in alerting one that there is cord at least across the back of the neck. I have always been able to confirm that it is cord using color Doppler. I have rarely been able to trace the cord (with color) around the front of the neck. For some reason, I have never discovered a nuchal cord when the front of the fetal neck is closest to the transducer.
