Diana, I understand your feeling sorry for folks who need more information, you are an empathetic member of the health care team. But, this isn't the perfect place for folks needing more information to look. Women's Heath, Pregnancy & Birth, Breast Care, and other sections of OBGYN.net were set up for access by the general public. Ultrasound has always been set up for medical professionals to discuss the use of sonography in OB/GYN. The discussion here is not intended to be for nonprofessional. If the nonprofessional, general public discussion is kept on the public forums, then other folks who have similar questions will benefit from the discussion.

Thanks for your participation. Terry J DuBose, M.S., RDMS Little Rock Arkansas USA

I always feel sorry for those folks who send messages trying to find out
more about their ultrasound exam. Many of them simply don't understand
what they are being told by their doctors, or they were too nervous to
absorb all the information. They are often afraid to annoy their
doctors, so they go everywhere to find information. The web is the
perfect place to look, and I don't blame them for trying to find out
whatever they can.

They need reassurance about what their doctor has told them. I generally don't answer them, but I don't think they should be stopped from being able to ask. If someone wants to answer them and has the authority to answer them well, I think it is fine.

The problem emails are those spam things. I get them in my regular email mailboxes too. It's just part of the internet experience right now.

This issue first came up soon after OBGYN-L went on the web. Unfortunately, as you say "Whoever sends them is getting sneakier so it's difficult to filter them out with software rules". Bruce and crew try to filter them, but they are overwhelming.

The problem is not unique to OBGYN.net, but exists on any large, successful, OPEN ACCESS, list. We discussed going behind a wall and charging a fee about 5 years ago, but that adds to the expense and limits access. The problem is worse now. It is difficult enough with patients who should be seeing a medical person rather than asking for advice long distance, but the SPAM is truly obnoxious.

Legislation has been proposed in Washington (not that all SPAM originates in the USA), but so far the "business interests" like the Chambers of Commerce organization have opposed limiting SPAM because they call it "advertising". With our current administration being a corporate culture, I do not expect to see much support for limiting any kind of commerce. Please don't blame the American people, most of us did not vote for Bush... and more will not soon. My apologies to any Republicans here, and I don't mean to introduce polemics to an ultrasound discussion group, but this is becoming a serious problem. Until the corporate culture currently in control of the USA's administration says stop, I see little hope.

If anyone has suggestions or wants to pay for a lobbying group to oppose the Chambers of Commerce, et al... please suggest what to do.

Sorry I don't have better answers...

Peace, Terry J. DuBose, M.S., RDMS Chair, Ultrasound section OBGYN.net Little Rock, Arkansas USA

Dear Terry I'm not sure if you're the correct person to be asking but is there any way we can stop the increasing numbers of thoroughly objectionable emails we are receiving via obgyn? Whoever sends them is getting sneakier so it's difficult to filter them out with software rules. Cheers Sue Sue Davies Program Director Australian Institute of Ultrasound

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
