There are a number of issues hear. There is a lot of work into PPROM (Preterm, Prelabour Rupture of Membranes)at the moment. A number of researchers have implicated infective causes associated with changes in local substances called prostaglandins. However, it has not been shown that treating women for infections that cannot be found is of any benefit. Theoretically it could also cause harm as antibiotics change the bugs in a woman's vagina. So on that front others will have to wait until research has found the answer.

You are at increased risk of PPROM a second time round but you a still much more likely not to have PPROM. At present, there is nothing of proven value to predict it early or prevent it.
