Re: Almost 4 months Post Partum reply to deborahFrom: Thomas (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 19 Sep 1998 10:22:28 -0500 (CDT)
I have read this with interest. On three fronts. Is it true that in the USA your records belong to you? That is certainly not the case in the UK. In the past I have accidently (on purpose) left the room with the records left open on the desk so women can read them (however, I don't think anyone could read my hand writing). I sympathise as I have first hand experience with the US forces. When in the UK we had a US airforce base nearby and pregnant women from the base came to see me. I had great difficulty getting old notes. Often I couldn't find a doctor to write to and when I could I often got no reply or was told that the notes were missing. However, I would recomend that you see the nurse practitioner. Unlike Deborah, I am not a nurse practitioner so I can give you unbiased advice. If you do need to see an OBGYN you have a line of commincation set up with a primary health care professional which will be valuable. More importantly, the NP is able to give you a continuity of care and immediate access that the specialist is unable to do. If you need to see a specialist your NP will arrange it. If NPs were not qualified, they wouldn't be allowed to do what they do. I have the highest regard for NPs and am sure that it is you best interest to see one. You may also need to see an OBGYN or not. Even if you do, you will benefit from seeing an NP first. For the record. Most specialists will not see patients unless referred by a primary health care professional first. This line of communication is too important to bypass.
