Herbal medicines are drugs in the same way that the pills doctors perscribe are drugs. Many modern medicines have historically started as herbs such the heart drug digoxin; the drug used to make the uterus contract after childbirth called ergometrine; and the ovarian cancer drug called taxol. The only difference is that their safety has been tested where as herbal remedies escape the vigorous drug testing laws by being classified as foods.
