Christy,

First, I would like to acknowledge that *yes*, the insurance red tape bothers many of us and causes alot of daily frustration.

Secondly, I would like to encourage you not to discount the nurse practitioners ability to help you with your problem. When we see patients that we are not familiar with we simply request their medical records for our review. In addition, patients such as yourself are usually very helpful in giving us the information we need to know. At 4 months post partum, it *is* possible that your problem is not related to the pregnancy or delivery. The nurse practitioner will sort that out.

I would not visit the NP with the intent to just obtain a referral. This could impede her (him?) ability to help you. As far as your insurance, if she determines that your problem does indeed require the services of an OB.gyn then she will be able to secure that referral without difficulty. Nurse practitioners, midwives and family physicians are very well qualified to provide a pretty extensive scope of care and know when to refer to a specialist. I am sure you will receive excellent care.

I hope that your problem will soon be resolved.
