Re: Baby's SizeFrom: Thomas (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 15 Sep 1998 23:02:49 -0500 (CDT)
It's only about now that fetal sizes differ large enough to form an opinion by feeling the uterus. However, with a growth retarded baby it is possible to pick it up earlier. Feeling a woman's abdomen and measuring the fundal height is a good screening test but the best way to know what the size of a baby is by ultrasound scan. There is an association between parental and offspring birthweight however it is possible for a small woman to have a large baby and a large woman to have a small baby. Let me bore you with a story. In the 1970s a young doctor who is now an eminent professor did a small study. He asked midwives and doctors to feel pregnant womens' abdomens and guess the birth weight. The results were not surprising. The experienced midwives and senior doctors gave the most accurate guess. Then the less experienced midwives and junior doctors. Finally the medical students and student midwives were the least accurate. There were about to publish the data until one (above average intelligence) medical student pointed out the error with the study. If the researchers had got a monkey to make a guess and that monkeys had guessed 7.5kg for each woman. Then the monkey would have been the most accurate.
