CMV?

I have a couple of questions regarding CMV (cytomegalovirus), with relation to donor sperm.

I am CMV negative, most of the donors are CMV positive. The sperm bank says that since CMV 'may' be passed through bodily fluids (ie, semen), we may not get sperm from a CMV positive donor. If this did not limit our choices so severly, it wouldn't be an issue.

The only things I can find regarding CMV is that it is a big threat to immuno-suppressed folks, and that about 1 in 10 of infants born with active CMV will have problems-which can be serious. I can find nothing on how CMV is passed on, how common CMV problems are in infants (ie, is this rare?), or how CMV passes to the baby.

So-

How is CMV spread? Is it a real, significant risk, to use CMV positive sperm (besides the fact that we don't know if my husband has CMV or not...if he does, and it is passed through semen, I could have gotten it already)? How common are CMV related problems in infants?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, since I spent most of today on Medline looking this up, and it looks like 99% of the studies are related to HIV or animals. I am trying to decide whether or not to argue with the sperm bank (ie, find out about a waiver or that sort of thing) about this.

BTW-Nice new forum :-) Dawn
