A question about episiotomyFrom: E (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 18 Sep 2000 20:17:06 -0500 (CDT)
I am currently pregnant with my second child; and, I would like to avoid an episiotomy with this birth. I am wondering if there's a certain weight of the baby that usually indicates that an episiotomy would be necessary? I am 5'2" and medium build. My first baby was 8lb 11oz, and I had the episiotomy. My doctor is already saying that I will probably have to have another one. This concerns me - that she already has this in her mind. I am thinking of looking around for another ob. I would just like some opinions as to whether or not my doctor is justified in thinking that a big baby will necessitate an episiotomy. Should I just expect that I will have to have one? I don't want to insist that I won't have one if it truly is necessary. Thank you for any input.
