28 weeks at risk for pretermFrom: Rachael (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 5 Sep 2000 16:05:35 -0500 (CDT)
I have a friend who is currently 28w2d. She has been having significant ctx since 21 weeks, when is was discovered her cervix was 3 cm, shortened from the measurement at her 19 week ultrasound. She has one child, born at 34-35 weeks after 10 weeks of bedrest for preterm labor. As of Friday, her cervix was very very soft, the doctor could insert his finger, but then told her she was not dilated. What does this mean? Does the cervix soften first? Then dilate? Is a softened cervix at this point significant in a second pregnancy, or can this be normal? We (friends) all find it interesting that she is not on bedrest with this pregnancy, and is doing most of her normal activity. I understand that management of "preterm" pregnancies has changed so that medical types have realized that bed rest and meds are not thought to lengthen gestation. She is seeing her doctor regularly and I'm sure has discussed all this with him, but I'm just curious as to what this all means and I can't very well ask her doctor. Well I suppose I could, but wouldn't likely get an answer. :)
