My gyno ordered my blood tests and afterwards said that she thought I probably did have PCOS based on two things: the 3:1 ratio of the FSH:LH and my high testosterone level. She refused to give me an vaginal ultrasound when I asked her to. She also refused to give me the 2 hour test that tests your insulin level because she said it was unnecessary. I am with Kaiser, by the way, and I guess I was naive enough to believe they would actually make decisions based upon what was good for my health instead of what was good for their pocketbook. People have told me Kaiser i is okay to have as long as you are an advocate for your own health. Well, I've had to be a total bitch to get anything done and some things they flat out refuse to do. I don't know what recourse I have. After reading this board I begged my gyno to give me an endo referral. After trying to talk me out of it for 15 minutes, she finally relented and practically stormed out of the room. I just saw the endo and he acted like he had no idea why I was there, that PCOS didn't involve his department. I had Sam Thatcher's book lying on the chair next to me to let him know that I knew a little of what I was talking about. I explained that I believe the problem stems from Insulin resistance and that I think I have that, as well as an increased likelihood to develop diabetes later in life. He completely dismissed those ideas as facts and said that the insulin connection to PCOS is just now being stuided and in the research and there is no way that they would treat that when there is no proven link. I said that I thought my testosterone was really high (after reading other people's levels on the board) and he said it wasn't for PCOS, that he knows people that have levels closer to 200! He just kepting asking me why I was there and that gynocology should be dealing with this! He said he's never ordered an ultrasound and that they don't even do that in his department and that if I wanted one (for some strange reason) I would have to ask my gyno. I told him I would like to know the size of my ovaries, if they have cysts on them, and what the lining of my uterus looks like. He just stared at me blankly. I am so frustrated! Unfortunately I am stuck with Kaiser until next October, and even then my other choices are other HMO's. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get my insurance company to stop being so cheap and do what is best for my health? Have any of you dealt successfully with Kaiser? Sorry this is so long. Thank you everyone for the continued great info and support you provide on this board. I really need it after going to my various medical appointments. Amy >
