an FYI/clarification:

Fen/Phen was the miracle diet drug combo that was pulled off the market a few years back... The first "half" of it, a drug called Fenfleuramine (sp?) was thought to be the cause of heart failure/heart disease in women who took the diet drug combo. To my knowledge, it has not been released to the market again, despite recent studies that claim that Fenfleuramine does not cause heart damage/failure... However, the second half of the pair, Phentermine, was approved by the FDA for use (alone or in a combination with medications like Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac) as an aid to patients trying to lose weight. While it is true that Phentermine is speed and is addictive, the FDA says it is safe to take when controlled and monitored closely by a physician...

(If anyone has more/better info on this, please share! Thanks!)

Hi Jackie. I have real concerns about you taking Phen. I believe that it is one of the diet drugs that was removed due to major problems with side effects like problems with the heart. Your doc doesn't sound too up to date on current research. Just because you had a hyster. does not mean you would not benefit from using metformin. PCOS does not go away after hyster. because it is cause by an endocrine/insulin problem. I would go make copies of current research available on a few different web sites and give these to them. A good place to start is: (blues.fd1.uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm) or (http://www.pcosupport.org) or (http://centerforpcos.bsd.uchicago.edu/) All these sites have info. that you can share. If you don't think he will be receptive, then start looking for a new doctor. Depending where you are there are docs listed at the pcosupport web site or ask here. I would reconsider using Phen to lose weight. Try a low-carb diet in the meantime. It seems to work for most of us. Kim M. At Mon, 10 Apr 2000, jackie wrote: >
