Re: To Jackie in PA Is a weight loss drug and diet the only way tFrom: Avalos (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 11 Apr 2000 08:30:50 -0500
Jackie: I have taken Phentermine, and I have also spoken to many doctors about it... Most doctors that I've talked to are reluctant to provide it since it is addictive and its effects diminish over time, requiring the person taking it to steadily increase the dosage... Since Phentermine is basically speed, this can be dangerous. Anyway, why is your Endocrinologist prescribing Phentermine? Sounds weird to me. Have you gotten a second opinion from another Endo? Endocrinologists specialize in the study and treatment of the body's hormones and hormonal systems... It makes no sense to me that this type of physician would ignore his specialty field and just prescribe speed to a patient. I think you are right to be concerned.... (and here I go again... see a new doctor!) I got to see the Endocronologist today. He says that there is no doubt that I have PCOS. (I knew that, I was diagnosed with SteinlLeventhal (PCOS) in the early 80's). I took all of the information that I had gotten here as well as what I got from the University of Chicago. He put me on a weight loss drug, Phentermine and said that all obese people have insulin resistance, therefore if I loose weight, the insulin resistance will go away. Is that true? In everything that I have read most people are having good results with Metformin. I had a hysterectomy 6 years ago. He said that because of this Metformin wouldn't help me, just loosing weight would. It will cost me over 100.00 per month to do this weightloss drug and keep seeing him. I need to know if this is a good treatment or just a way for me to spend my money. Please reply back asap thanks . Jackie in PA
