Re: High Cholesterol, Hi Triglycerides, Low Carbs?

Hi,

I would like to share my expereince. I never had really high cholesterol - it was middle of normal range, but my HDL (good cholesterol) was really really low. About 20 when it should be more than 35.

Since then I have made an effort to eat more fats (healthy type mainly), eat more healthy protein, eat a lot more veges, restrict carbohydrates - particularly the refined type, have a glass of red wine or other alcohol regularly - nearly every day, and exercise as much and as vigorously as possible. I am also being treated with metformin and thryoid replacement (thryoid and insulin problems can both lead to cholesterol problems). My fasting insulin was never really high, but now it is really low - about 3.5. Now, 8 months later, my total cholesterol is below the 'normal range', LDL, triglycerides have all decreased and HDL is now up to about 28. Still way too low, but because the rest is also so low, the ratio between the LDL and HDL is much better.

So from this I would say both diet and exercise and meds are important. I am pretty sure that the thyroid meds and metformin have also affected the cholesterol readings.

Best wishes
