Re: New to this (long reply)From: Leslie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 03 May 2001 10:10:23 -0700
Hi Kiwi I am so sorry to hear about all you have been and are going through. And no, I won't assume anyone here is psychotic! lol We all have our troubles... Today, there are no known "cures" for PCOS, but there are several ways to control it. Supposedly in another year or so, there will be a drug that will be released specifically for us cysters, to help combat a dietary shortage that may contribute to our difficulties, but as of now, there are no miracle fixes. :( Most of us (at least the ones I know) don't tend to overeat. We tend to be pretty conscientious as to what we put in our bodies...and still end up being larger than what is considered "normal". Many of us have found sticking to a low carbohydrate diet very helpful in controlling our symptoms. I personally use a combination of a low carb diet, mixed with a whole food/ low glycemic index diet, and have found it helpful in controling my symptoms. I also found that my energy levels went way up once I stopped eating wheat and most carbs. I still eat them, I'm just very careful which ones I ingest. Increasing fiber intake (flax seed is now a staple in my diet) has also helped a lot. I think what your doc may have been trying to do is to increase your brain's seritonnin levels...which is supposed to help decrease the appetite and give a feel-good aftereffect. Has anyone else got any ideas why he would prescribe this??? There are other drugs that are designed for diabetics which are commonly prescribed for cysters too, but some of them have..umm...nasty gastro-intestinal effects, so he may have decided this may not be the best path for you to go down. Have you had your insulin levels checked? Having high IR (insulin response) is often a side effect of PCOS, and is very good to know. It will help you figure out how your treatments are doing...not to mention that high IR levels make it extremely difficult to lose weight. I would *strongly* recommend you get this done, if you haven't already done so. I hope this helps somewhat. Please feel free to ask more questions. We all get a little busy at times, so if you don't recieve a response, post the question again. ;) <hugs!> Lekili
