Barry Schiffrin is(was) one of the leading researchers on Fetal Monitoring in the 70's and 80's. You YOUNG Guys slay me. The College statement sounds nice. Are there any teeth in it? Can they do anything about it? Have they kicked anybody out of the College for violating it? NO, NO, and NO. R. intermittent
> auscultation. He is a well known plaintiff's expert witness and This sounds like an interesting topic. Who is this guy? Does anyone have any stories about him? What options does one have when encountering a "hired gun"? Per ACOG Com Op Number 56, October 1987 Ethical Issues Related to Expert Testimony by Obstetricians and Gynecologists The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recognizes the duty of obstetricians and gynecologists to testify as expert witnesses on behalf of defendants or plaintiffs, in accordance with their judgment on the merits of malpractice cases. At the same time, the College cannot condone the participation of physicians in legal actions where their testimony will impugn performance that falls within accepted standards of practice or, conversely, will support obviously deficient practice. Since the experts establish the standards in a given case, care must be exercised to ensure that such standards do not narrowly reflect the expert's views to the exclusion of other acceptable choices. The College considers unethical any expert testimony that does not adhere scrupulously to objectivity. Does this matter? Geffrey H. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
