She consluts me about contraception. Does not want barrier methods unless nothing else available. She smokes, so combined OCs are contraindicated. She has never been able to take pills faithfully, so progestin-only pills worry me. She doesn't want Norplant because she thinks she's close enough to menopause that she doesn't need what she calls "a 5-year solution." She is most interested in Depo-Provera. However, she also wants to be able to tell when she enters menopause so that she can start taking estrogen replacement. 1) Will Depo suppress the normal symptoms of menopause? (Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, etc.; obviously it will tend to make her amenorrheic.) Sometimes it is effective in treating these symptoms. So it might. 2) Will Depo suppress the elevated level of FSH if we were to screen her periodically (every 6-12 months) for menopause even in the absence of symptoms? I don't know and that is an excellent question

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit.
