Dr. Stanley--

Does the hospital have any sibling classes to prepare children to be present at the birth? The hospital I deliver at does--not only do they cover the physiology, but they prepare the child for the sight of blood, screaming, etc.

The parents are told they must have another adult support person whose entire responsibility is the child--if the child is bored during labor or desires to leave, this person must take the child out and stay with him/her.

I have had several children present at births and for the most part things have gone well. I have had teens who videotaped the birth and children who have cut the cord. Occasionally at night the younger ones will sleep through the whole thing; sometimes its clear a child is not comfortable and wants to leave. I do not agree with pressuring a child who does not want to be present to stay.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
