My then 7-year-old daughter wanted to be present when her baby brother was born. She was well prepared and had a support person present. However, when membranes were ruptured at 9cm there was thick meconium. The baby was born a few minutes later, floppy and limp, covered in mec.

He was soon fine, but it wasn't the lovely storybook delivery she had been prepared for. Now she is 21 and just the other day told me that her memories of the birth are not very positive--"Oxygen!" I don't think she's traumatized for life, but it was a frightening experience.

Per Les's suggestion, I guess she should have been removed from the room as soon as the mec was noticed, but everyone was too busy getting the baby born and resuscitated to think about that.

So although I would respect a patient's wishes about her child being present, there can be drawbacks, even when it looks like an uncomplicated multip birth. I don't encourage it.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
