Lactation Consultant and Breastfeeding PromotionFrom: Cindy (cindy@tidalwave.net)Wed Jul 30 08:17:49 1997
I have been reading the last few digests with great interest because of several posts on breastfeeding and LActation Consultants. I am an RN that works in Labor and Delivery, Post Partum and Newborn Nursery in a small Level 2 hospital in Virginia. 4 years ago I became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. We have approx 400 - 450 deliveris per year at our hospital. I have designated hours that I am scheduled as a "nurse" and others that I am a "LC". We currently have 3 nurses , including myself on of staff of 19 nurses that are IBCLC. Nursery nurses cant be trained to be LC's by LC's as Daniel stated "I don't know! Get your lactation consultant to make one great tour of the country and educate the nursery nurses. Then we won't need a lactation consultant." Lactation Consultants must have thousands of doucment practice hours before they can even sit for the exam, it is an emerging profession that all breastfeeding mom and babies can certianly benefit from. Im sure you all are aware of all of the benefits of breastfeeding, now we need to make Breastfeeding the cultural norm and not botttle feeding. Its our job to promote and educate our clients about breastfeeding. IMHO, this begins in the OB's office on the first prenatal appointment, your patients think everything their doc says is the gospel and will listen to you :) :) I am happy to supply any breastfeeding info to any one that needs it , just let me know what you are looking for !!! WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK AUG 1 - 7 , 1997

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
