I suspect that the seemingly meaningless characters in the postings that
keep popping up (see below) represent an attempt of one e-mail program to
send an attachemtn to another e-mail program, the problem being that the
second e-mail program does not understand the protocol that the first
program is using. I have not seen the seemingly meaningless characters show
up on my e-mail program. Therefore I suspect that my e-mail program can read
the attachment whereas dr. Woolley's e-mail program cannot.

By the way, there are at least four coding protocols for e-mail attachments.
The problem arises because e-mail uses 7 bit bytes (the lower 128 characters
in ASCII), transmitting all messages as text. Hence, if a file using 8 bit
bytes is to be sent, it must be converted from 8 bit bytes to 7 bit bytes.
The protocols most frequently used are:
- UUENCODE/UUDECODE (UU stands for Unix to Unix -- this was the original
coding scheme)
- BinHex (Used on Mac's)
- MIME (Multiple Internet Mail Extensions -- rapidly becoming the internet
standard)
and
- Base64 (Used by GroupWise and Netscape Navigator and possibly other
systems -- a subset or variation of MIME, I believe)
