Dear Michael:

I think an open approach to regulation of medications is a move in the right direction. You might find the regulations recently established for the Ontario College of Midwives (Canada) helpful. They specifically outline both drugs midwives can carry and drugs they can prescribe. There is also a detailed list of circumstances (at various stages of pregnancy, birth, postpartum) requiring midwives to obtain consultation or to transfer care. Regulations cover home and hospital births.

Midwives in Ontario are the first provincial group in Canada to officially recognize midwives - other provinces are coming on board. Although we have been slow, we have had the advantage of learning from other countries so hopefully we have been able to use the best of everyone.

Copies of the Ontario regulations are available from the College of Midwives of Ontario, 2195 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
