18 Week "Previa"From: Ronald Helm (ronhelm@ronhelm.seanet.com)Fri Sep 20 08:16:27 1996
>>>I also don't ask patients to abstain with previa on 18wks scans, but others in our group do require abstention! Is anyone aware of any study data or standard regarding asymptomatic previa incidentally found on mid trimester scan?? Is this a medical legal response?<<< The others in your group are asking couples to abstain from intercourse based on a mistaken diagnosis of "placenta previa" on an 18 week scan? This is ridiculous given the parapetetic (sp) nature of the placenta at this time in pregnancy. What about all of these "previas" who haven't yet been detected because they haven't been scanned. This is a prime example of providers treating the scan rather than the patient. The 18 week scan diagnosed previa is practically a normal variant, and unless the patient bleeds, needs only be repeated at a later gestation.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
