Re: AmenorrheaFrom: R. Daniel Braun (rBraun@IUNET.IUPUI.EDU)Wed Sep 4 07:34:44 1996
how would you replace in a woman who smokes > 1ppd cigarettes? Would you go ahead and use OCP's, would you go to ERT, or would you not give anything until she quits smoking? Mitch N. IMHO, if she is estrogen deficient, she needs estrogen replacement. I am unaware of any evidence that smoking is a contraindication to estrogen replacement or even estrogen replacement with occasional (monthly) progesterone supplementation. There has been shown to be a small (1-2/100,000 in very young(under 35 y/o) & 20-30/100,000 in young (35-50 y/o) women) problem with the use of oral contraceptives which are a whole diferent ballgame from estrogen replacement.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
