<< So it sounds like the HandMaiden's Tale is NOT the story of government getting involved in people's lives, per se. It's the story of government desperately trying to save the human race in a postnuclear disaster scenario... Sounds like a lot different story than the abortion/euthanasia debate TODAY. >>

_The Hand Maid's Tale_ is the story of an elitist group of people imposing their own religious values on others for the promotion of their own selfish agenda. It is a story about the enslavement of women and the absence of moral justice which can sometimes accompany strongly held religious beliefs. It is about the the perils implicit in any theocracy and makes a strong case for the continued separation of church and state.

One of my favorite scenes from the book is when the prominent government official indulges in a secret act of perversion. He invites his "Hand Maiden" (a sexual slave enlisted to bear children to him on behalf of his infertile wife) to play Scrabble with him, thus acknowledging her as a thinking human being. This is a strictly forbidden form of social intercourse.

The book truly is chilling and very well written. Margaret Atwood is a well-respected and very accomplished writer of mainstream literature. _The Hand Maid's Tale_ is a work of literary fiction which happens to be set in the near future. It is not, strictly speaking, science fiction.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
