Lilyan,

I believe you are partly right, but partly wrong as well.

Your friend was lucky to have a great mother who instilled certain valuable ethical lessons in her daughter, and gave her the confidence to go out and achieve her dreams. You are absolutely correct in that.

But you do your friend a disservice if you believe that she never would have acheived her goals if social welfare programs would not have "helped" her along. People who acheive their dreams have a number of things in common. One of those things is self esteem. Another is a vision of the future. This woman obviously saw long term goals as attainable and did not let ordinary obstacles get in her way.

Do you honestly feel that this woman would have given up had social programs not been available? I seriously doubt it. She may just as well have been successful in some other endeavor.

There are hundreds of examples of this kind of human acheivement. The reason we don't see them often is because the media is focused on negativity and as health care people we have a tendency to work with a preponderance negative unhealthy people.

Your friend is not a miracle of governmental programs...she's just a miracle.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
