>On Friday, Aug. 23, Ralf Witteler wrote concerning my note on uses of cord blood "Emphasis on what minorities? and What can you tell about your successes?" > >First, let me note that I am not involved in the study. At the cord blood bank in Tucson, AZ, about 50% of the stored blood is from Hispanics, the predominant minority in the area. There is emphasis on obtaining cord blood from all minorities. > >At the University of Arizona, 7-8 patients have received cord blood. Nationally, there have been about 300 such "transplants". About 2/3 of the cases are for cancers (leukemia, lymphomas) with a success rate of 50-60%. The remaining 1/3 of cases are for genetic blood disorders such as SCID and thalassemia, with success rates of approximately 85%. > --

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
