The suggestion is that the mares are made repeatedly pregnant and their foals taken away from them.

Question - How do you collect ALL a mare's urine ? You certainly don't let her run around a filed all day. The reports I've heard involve cramped inhumane conditions.

If I had the choice of a drug prepared humanely compared to one where animals suffered I'd prefer the former. Outside of these "natural hormones" of dubious pharmacological benefit, there are many available preparations of oestrogens available which involve only cruelty to soya- beans :-)
