Re: "Natural" estrogens/progestins

I asked Leon Speroff, M.D., about animal abuse and Premarin. He stated that the owners of the horses were "independent contractors" for the pharmaceutical company, and the company has no say in the disposition of the horses used. The urine is collected from pregnant mares, and they are allowed to move about at will.

As far as "natural" hormone use, I have had several patients who are following the advice of Dr. Lee. I tell them about the problems inherent in topical application of a drug....how much is bioavailable? How much is utilized and excreted? What are the possible adverse consequences of a progesterone product that bypasses the "first-pass" effect on lipids, the heart, etc.? I can understand the distrust that some may have for the pharmaceutical industry, but we can at least see some accountability via studies and long-term follow-up that I have not seen with the "natural" hormones.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
