Cord BloodFrom: CNMPAT@aol.comSun Aug 25 12:31:29 1996
>> We just collect the routine cord bloods for RH.>> RH? You do not mean Rhesus, do you? Sorry, could you please explain the meaning.> Yes, for RH typing of the baby. If +, mom gets Rho Gam. Also might be used for ABO incompatabilty. We collect on everyone. Some use it to screen for Sickle Cell too, I believe.
>>> There is a private consumer approach and a public bank approach. We collect cord blood for autologous transfusion.>>> Yes, there are organizations collecting Stem Cells from cord bloods. There are private groups (you can have collected and stored your own babies stem cells, and for a fee, they are stored in the event you need them at some future date ($1500 minimum (up front) , plus a yearly storage fee...providers collect the specimen.... Also, there are public data banks to which you can donate your child's cord blood, and make the stem cells available to others. No cost to the family donating the stem cells. But, you can't subsequently be guaranteed that the stem cells would be available for your own child. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
