Barbara Harper RN (waterbirth@aol.com) is probably the guru of waterbirth and has worked with many hospitals to assist in setting up protocols. She doesn't mind tentative inquiries, such as yours. She also supplies the tubs parents often bring to births. She can offer you a good bibliography. Also does seminars on the subject.

Points are well taken. It is not my own personal choice, as I work in a group practice. (This is not at U.W., but at Group Health Cooperative - the HMO where I practice). This decision has been made primarily in reponse to consumer demand I think. I am reserving opinions until I know and see more, although I have been intrigued by the idea since I saw it depicted on "20/20" (at an east coast hospital) several years ago. I have heard that it has been done for some time in UK, and there are several citations in the British Medical Journal which I need to look up. I was hoping that some listmembers on that side of the Atlantic would be able to shed some light on the subject.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
