Depo-Provera and FSH level

Colleagues:

I was recently asked about checking an FSH level on an asymptomatic patient who has been taking Depo-Provera injections every 3 months for the last 2 years for contraception. Her ARNP is considering starting hormone replacement therapy with continuous estrogen/progesterone and wanted to know if it was possible to check an FSH level. My understanding is that Depo-P suppresses the ovary but that ovulation can still occur. Any endocrine wizards out there? I found it an interesting question, but could not find the answer in any of my references. Thanks in advance.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
