Re: Assistants at CESAREAN SectionFrom: madeleine (bblackpo@cgrnserc.uwaterloo.ca)Sun Aug 4 16:31:22 1996
> > <<As an aside, my (admittedly biased) opinion is that a well trained family > physician can make an adept assistant, and doubles well for neonatal > rescusitation if necessary.>> At our small hospital, it is usually a family doc who does the assist, unless the OB feels the need for someone more experienced. (a few don't assist, and others in the call group assist instead. Thus they become quite experienced.) However, an NICU nurse goes to every section to receive baby. When it is necessary to resusitate, usually the anesthetist helps me. Peds are only occasionally called, only if severe distress. Since it is a small hospital and they don't get much practice intubating, if this is necessary they often ask the anesthetist. As an NICU nurse, my only complaint with this is that every anesthetist does things a little differently, and its hard to keep track. Have finally convinced the OR supervisor to give us crib cards for each doc like the scrub nurses have for the OB's. M. Clin, RN

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
