Re: Assistants at CESAREAN SectionFrom: Gail Waldby MD (gwaldby@iw.net)Sun Aug 4 16:21:00 1996
Here in Huron, SD, 3 of our family physicians do C-sections. The hospital rule is that they must do 40 under supervision, then their proctor must say they can competently perform a C-section, then they must do 10 per year. The family physicians assist each other and our OB with C-sections. One of the family physicians actually does more OB and more C-sections than our OB. The same family physicians assist when their patients have other surgeries. In rural areas, family physician assistants are quite common at all surgeries, although, this has decreased a lot as the insurance companies have reduced reimbursement for assistants. In these cases, the hospitals may provide RN First Assistants or the surgeon may provide a PA or additionally trained CST (Surg Tech).

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
